Josh has been providing legal counsel to innovative, forward-thinking, technology companies for over 25 years. Known as a trusted business partner and proven leader, Josh collaborates across the organization, providing pragmatic legal advice and practical business guidance, creatively solving complex problems, all while mitigating business and legal risk.

Josh began his career at Bigstep.com, a web 1.0 internet start-up that pioneered a web-based service for the creation of websites for small businesses, including what were then “new” features like buying a domain name, showing product catalogs, and integrated credit card payments processing, all of which are taken for granted today. Josh was constantly presented with issues of first impression (back before online terms of service were a thing), and successfully guided company executives with sound legal and business analysis. Josh moved on to software publisher Roxio, which developed and ultimately sold its CD and DVD burning business to Sonic Solutions. While at Roxio, Josh was part of the core team which purchased the Napster assets out of bankruptcy and in 2004 relaunched Napster as one of the first music subscription services. After nearly 7 years at Roxio/Napster/Sonic Solutions, Josh joined Neustar as part of the team that built-out its digital media, martech, adtech, data, domain name registry, and identity offerings.  

In 2021, Josh pivoted his career out of the digital world (which essentially was about helping big companies sell more stuff to more people), into a more purpose driven endeavor when he joined Proterra, Inc. At Proterra, in addition to supporting the electric bus, charging infrastructure, and data analytics products, Josh was a key member of the team that grew its battery pack manufacturing business which ultimately was sold to A.B. Volvo in 2024. At Estes, Josh is General Counsel and Head of Government Affairs, providing the executive team legal guidance on commercial, corporate, intellectual property, employment issues, among others, and leads the company’s efforts to develop relationships with and secure funding from federal agencies and state governments.

Josh obtained his BA from Vassar College, and graduated cum laude for his JD/MBA from the University of San Francisco. Outside of Estes, Josh plays drums and anchors the rhythm section in a working San Francisco Bay Area band, competes in triathlons (completing the Escape from Alcatraz race twice), and is discovering the joys of freebird life now that the kids have flown the coop.
